Child and parents with good oral health celebrating Halloween

For some people, Halloween might be all about ghastly ghosts and grasping ghouls. But for kids? It’s usually the one night of the year they can indulge in literal buckets of candy. And that means that parents are on sugar patrol. Our Raleigh dentist, Dr. Matthew Ricke, recently shared advice with CBS17 on how families can enjoy the holiday without hurting their oral health. Keep reading to see what he said and find some bonus preventive dentistry tips to keep their smiles strong all year.

Watch Out for Sticky and Sour Treats

Dr. Ricke named sticky and sour candies as the biggest risks to oral health, including taffy, caramel, and gummies. Sticky treats cling to teeth, giving bacteria extra time to feed on sugar. Sour candies add citric acid (the sugar-like stuff you see on the outside) to the mix, which can weaken enamel.

Pair Candy With a Meal

As with all things, moderation is the key. “Letting kids eat their candy right after a meal is ideal,” Dr. Ricke said. Mealtime boosts saliva production, which rinses away sugar and neutralizes acid. Nibbling all day does the opposite and keeps teeth under attack for hours.

Rinse When You Can’t Brush

If brushing isn’t possible right away, swish with water. It helps wash away sugar and sticky bits. After sour candy, wait about 30 minutes to brush, since acid temporarily softens enamel.

Tame the Leftover Stash

For the candy that’s left after Halloween, Dr. Ricke suggests letting kids pick their favorites, setting a daily limit, and donating the rest. Letting your kids in on that conversation can not only make the limits easier to follow but can also help build a healthy relationship with sugar. Donating all the extras also means less temptation sitting on the kitchen counter!

Make Brushing Fun

Candy season can be a great time to strengthen brushing and flossing routines. Try brushing by candlelight, turning on some spooky-fun songs, or rewarding your kids with Halloween-themed stickers. These can help make brushing and flossing more of an adventure and less of a chore.

Halloween doesn’t have to be scary for your teeth. With smart choices and regular care, your family can enjoy the treats without the guilt. Whether you’re a pumpkin, a monster, or a ghost, a post-trick-or-treat checkup is a great idea to keep your smiles strong all year long.
